BioLargo is a cleantech company that creates innovative technology and solutions for problems such as air quality, water contamination, and tough environmental problems like PFAS contamination. Below is our recent interview with Dennis P. Calvert, President & CEO of BioLargo:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to BioLargo?
A: What makes BioLargo especially unique as a cleantech company is that we don’t just develop innovative, patented technologies – we are also a full-service environmental engineering company that can tackle an incredibly vast range of engineering challenges thanks to our services team that averages 20+ years experience in the field (including high-profile work like dioxin remediation, anthrax remediation for the US Government, post-Katrina clean up in New Orleans, rebuilding water and wastewater systems in Haiti after its hurricane disasters and a long list of work for the Department of Defense). Individually, these components of our business are important, but together they create an environment where we are capable of solving a wide array of tough environmental challenges. This, in the end, is our mission – to solve tough environmental challenges and make the world a better, healthier place.
Q: Could you tell us something more about the technologies you’re commercializing?
A: BioLargo holds over 20 issued patents for innovative cleantech technologies and processes and we are still innovating. So far, our top innovations include: 1) our AEC treatment technology for per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a water contaminant that is creating a widespread regulatory crisis to remove these ‘forever chemicals’ with municipalities and industry scrambling to find good, affordable solutions. 2) CupriDyne Clean odor and VOC control, a patented air quality control product that eliminates odor-causing compounds in the air rather than masking them now being adopted by the solid waste handling industry and with new distribution shaping up for the wastewater treatment industry. It’s an amazing product because not only is it extremely effective, its eco-friendly, non-toxic, and more affordable that other products and then 3) Our Advanced Oxidation System (AOS) a low-energy, low-cost water treatment technology that utilizes a specialized iodine electrochemical oxidative process to eliminate hard-to-remove water contaminants, while consuming record-low electrical power.
Each of these technologies are designed to be a best-in-class contender for solving a tough environmental challenge, and each is designed to be deployed into the market to validate their value proposition as we expand market share through partners around the world.

Q: You’ve recently announced crowdfunding offering of water subsidiary opportunity to invest in water treatment technology; could you tell us something more?
A: The best place to learn about BioLargo Water’s crowdfunding effort is right on their Crowdfunding Offering page, which you can find at www.waterworksfund.com.
The folks at WaterWorks had a vision to do two things: the first was to identify innovative solutions for solving modern water treatment challenges, and the second was to help accelerate the development and commercialization of technologies like these by allowing everyday people to invest in the opportunities. They recognized us as a significant water treatment innovator in line with their mission and that really meshed with their culture of pursuing innovation and opportunity.

Q: Why is now the time for a technology solution provider like BioLargo?
A: When I get this question, I often think of the famous Wayne Gretsky quote, “Skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been.”. That’s the way BioLargo works – we target the problems of tomorrow, not the problems of yesterday, and we address them with technology solutions that feature high innovation and high value so that they offer the best chance possible to disrupt their targeted markets.
A good example of this is our PFAS treatment solution, the AEC. We recognized early on that PFAS contamination was becoming an extremely hot topic and widespread problem, and we moved to start developing a treatment solution for it, receiving grant funding from the EPA to do it. We’re now positioned to be a cutting-edge PFAS treatment solution provider.
Examples of technological advancement, like our PFAS technology, were a direct result of our company culture of innovation, where we aim to empower our engineers, scientists, and business leaders to push the envelope and take risks to test new ideas. We are designed to be nimble, and more readily anticipate where the “puck” is going so that we can solve the problem of tomorrow. Our continued success has been and will continue to be ‘by-design’, recruiting the right talent and creating an environment where preparation meets opportunity.
Commercially, we continue to expand sales with national accounts and build new partner relationships like our recent manufacturing partnership with South Korea’s leading wastewater treatment company BKT and Tomorrow Water.

Q: What are some of the main objectives for BioLargo in 2020 and how do you plan to achieve them?
A: Our current, overarching goal is to continue our current transformation from a tech development company to a commercial solutions provider, meaning growing our revenues from product sales and services and exploiting the well-defined innovations and opportunities we have found.
Specifically, we intend to pursue partnership opportunities with industry leaders. Our goals include pursuing a 2-3X top-line monthly revenue growth, continued sales and marketing investment in the waste handling industry for our air quality control products and services, secure new channel partners for new markets, such as wastewater, and drive profitability. We also intend to launch our first commercial trial for our AOS clean water technology in the near future, commercialize our PFAS treatment technology, the AEC, and continue to drive commercial sales across all our product lines. We intend to invest to grow, and continue improving our balance sheet.
